LI-CHI CHIANG

This collection uses natural cotton cord as its primary material, exploring repetitive actions and shifts in state of mind. The entire collection is constructed solely from cords, with dense machine stitching used to create rigid silhouettes, complemented by extensive hand-sewn connections. Through the repeated layering of cords, variations in height and the shadows created by stitching imitate the seemingly still yet flowing patterns of water found in the sand gardens of Zen gardens.

The repetitive process of sewing day after day is not merely a method of constructing structure, but also a meditative practice that allows thoughts to settle. Through focused handwork and a dialogue with materials, I seek to find balance with inner restlessness, ultimately transforming complex craftsmanship into a pure and restrained structural aesthetic.

The collection breaks away from conventional fabric construction and explores sustainability, functionality, and utility from the material level. Layered cotton cords are supported primarily by their own tension. Hand-sewn connections preserve flexibility and natural openings between the cords, allowing the lines to extend naturally with the body's movement. In this way, the garments establish a fluid relationship between the body and rigid structure while echoing the spirit of Zen.
