Perfect Fixation

Description

This series originates from a reflection on the beauty standards of contemporary society. We abstract the human body into the geometric form of the “circle,” a symbol of perfection, in order to depict how people forcibly cut, reshape, and reconstruct their bodies to conform to society’s formula of perfection, ultimately packaging themselves into Barbie-like specimens stripped of touch and freedom.

To express these non-ergonomic geometric forms and the extreme smoothness of a completely seamless surface, we carried out extensive material and structural experimentation. EVA was used to test rigidity and load-bearing capacity, allowing us to create sculptural volumes that stand away from the body without touching the skin. At the same time, we combined plaster, body filler, white glue, and other mixed media, repeatedly casting and polishing them to construct a hard, smooth outer shell with an almost sculptural texture.

Obsession with Circular Form acts as a mirror, reflecting the ways in which we discipline the body and surrender the self under social expectations. Through the repeated process of reshaping the silhouette, we compulsively transform ourselves, until this fixation on circular perfection turns the self into a specimen that is at once magnificent and deeply imprisoning.
