To strengthen international academic exchange, our department actively invites renowned international scholars and designers to teach, and hosts international design workshops and lectures led by industry experts. These efforts enhance the university’s global visibility and foster meaningful academic collaboration.

In the first semester of the 2025 academic year, our department invited Professor Gareth Paul Kershaw from the Fashion Design program at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, to teach the third-year course International Design Workshop (1) for both the day program and continuing education program. Professor Kershaw has nearly thirty years of teaching and industry experience, specializing in pattern design.

Professor Kershaw’s long-term research focuses on menswear pattern cutting, exploring the integration of design and functionality, with particular attention to advanced textiles and emerging manufacturing technologies. This workshop aims to strengthen students’ practical, prototype-based outcomes and their understanding of functional apparel design. Using menswear pattern cutting as a research method, students deepen their knowledge of design foundations within the global menswear industry.

The course uses the Swiss Alpine military jacket M70 as a case study, allowing students to thoroughly analyze its pattern and design, while learning about the historical context and embedded knowledge within the garment. This helps students understand the strong relationship between clothing and function.

Through hands-on garment analysis, students explore the physical structure of menswear pattern design and create garments that balance aesthetics and functionality.
