Shio Han

Costume Designer

I’m Shio (born Han Chi-Yu). I graduated from the Department of Fashion Design at Shih Chien University in 2017, then went on to complete my Master’s degree in Fashion Design at Parsons School of Design in New York. My 2020 graduate collection caught the attention of Vogue Magazine, Dazed, and 1 Granary, which led me to join the womenswear brand Melitta Baumeister as a designer and creative pattern developer.
Melitta, the brand’s founder, is a German-born designer based in New York, known for her sculptural silhouettes and innovative use of structured, unconventional materials. During my three years at the brand, her design philosophy profoundly influenced me and laid a strong foundation for my later transition into costume design for drag performers.

After leaving MB, I met Nymphia Wind, a drag queen who had just begun her career in New York, and we soon became close creative collaborators. Since our first meeting in 2023, I’ve designed numerous looks for Nymphia’s various performances and appearances. Following her championship win, we continued to work together to create multiple looks for the filming of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 17 (hereafter referred to as RPDR).

Through my close collaboration with Nymphia, I also began designing costumes for drag performers across the U.S., Taipei, and Canada. My works have been featured in a wide range of settings — from RPDR tapings, nightclub and bar performances, and solo tour outfits to red carpet looks for the Emmy Awards and stage costumes for the Cultural Olympics in Paris.

Educational Highlight

Professor Chang Shu-Chun, who taught garment construction, was meticulous, patient, and held high standards. When my technical skills were still rough, I often spent entire weekends in the classroom, and Professor Chang would always stay with us until the very end. Through the countless cycles of unpicking and redoing, she taught me the importance of details and the attitude of striving for perfection—lessons that have had a profound influence on me ever since.

When you feel frustrated, it’s not because you’re not good enough, but because the right moment hasn’t arrived yet.
